I had one month. One month I was crafting, sewing, knitting and wrote a book. Then the perfect house finally came along. Seriously? We have been looking for our 'perfect' house for over five years. We had to settle for one that was good and wonderful but just did not have the spaces in it we needed so we kept a watch out. One month after I retired we found it.
One month after I retired I was cleaning our present house, decluttering, packing, and getting ready to make a bid on the house we found. I laughed when people asked me how I was enjoying retirement. All one month of it. Then they looked at me like I was crazy when I told them we were moving...again...just three years in the house we had been for only three years. We knew we were crazy too, but when you find the right thing, time is no object!
So began the moving process. It was harder this time, since moving into this house we had inherited furniture and clothing from my mom and our daughter, both who had died less than a year ago. No way was I throwing away items and so it was all packed with our stuff. The movers, who had also moved us three years ago remembered we had a lot of 'stuff.' Ha! Wait until they see what we had now. Previously we had 30 years of accumulated things from raising three kids to adults and dogs and cats and a multitude of hobbies that you may just take up again so you cannot throw the materials away. That was a lot. But now it was just as much stuff even though we had weeded lots of things out already.
But we moved, and began unpacking. My back is still yelling at me from all the schlepping. But we love the new house, it is slightly bigger, even has a pool in the backyard. But most of all it fits my husband and me and our family. That was the whole point, to find a place for us to have family and friends over to visit.
So now retirement is learning how to take care of an inground pool with a sand filter that needs backwashing, a pool that has to be cleaned every single day. But I also now have an office with a window that looks on bushes with birds to watch and out the dining room window a family of squirrels that entertain us through every meal.
How is retirement? Wonderful. I am never bored. I knit and crochet and enjoy nature walks around the yard. We are a nation of go go goers, never resting, always thinking how can I make money at this. Why don't we just enjoy what is around us and be content? I never really enjoyed working. I stayed home with our kids when they were little and I love being back home now.
I have already written a book with my granddaughters and I am working on another one. I have set up a craft room which is calming and bright. I can sit there and figure out do I want to paint, color, sew or cricut? I love it and it truly is one of my many happy places in this home.
So, yes, this is retirement. The move has settled down, most of the boxes put away. I am still putting things in order but I don't have to rush because, well, I am retired. I can take all the time I want!
